The Island Atmosphere
San Pedro Town,
home of Seven Seas Resort, is the major settlement on the island and is home to
approximately 5,000 residents. The islanders speak both Spanish and English and
welcome you as their friends. A familiar sign in town reads, "Welcome to
San Pedro where you won't be a stranger for long." The island has the best
fishing and diving facilities in the country. The town is a picture postcard
setting with small colorfully painted houses set alongside sand streets nestled
beside the clear turquoise sea. No building is higher that a coco palm, or
three stories. Golf carts and bicycles are the principal mode of
transportation. The streets are home to local and visiting barefoot strollers,
casually making their way through the shops and restaurants or just relaxing
and chatting with the locals who are mostly of Spanish and Mayan descent are
friendly and tolerant. If you are new to the island, leave about two thirds of
your clothing at home. Bring swim suits, tanning lotion, sandals and a hat.
Long pants are just not needed, ever. This is one very relaxed place! There are
only a few streets, none of which are paved! One street by the airstrip has
cobblestones for 200 yards. Most people go barefoot or wear sandals,
everywhere. Just Remember....Sand Pedro is very small and everything there is
small....the restaurants, bars, gift shops, resorts(Yes even the Seven Seas is
small and very friendly. Oops, there is one thing in San Pedro that isn't small
and that is the hearts of its people.....but that's good. Ambergris Caye
has much to admire. Away from the center of town there is an abundance of birds
and other animals. Much of the island is covered with forest that attracts
wildlife. Many of the yards of the houses and hotels bloom with tropical flora.
The sea abounds with adventure for fishermen, divers, snorkelers and sailors.
Some of the best outfitters for fishing and diving trips are found here, along
with some charter boats. San Pedro Town, the only town on the island and home
to Seven Seas Resort, makes a fine base for excursions to nearby attractions
and the more distant islands and atolls. The stores are well stocked with a
variety of food and some of the country's best cooks take pride in their
seafood specialties.
